Saint Mary's Century...I'm not use to these flat roads!

I prefer climbing mountain roads than going 20+ mph along relatively flat roads. Most of you know that by now. Yesterday's ride in southern Maryland took me along roads that were flat with the occasional hill to get over. For the first twenty miles I was with a group of six. Testosterone was in full force. But that can only get you so far! Soon it would only be myself and a 30 year old with powerful legs and unrelenting stamina. With winds blowing 15-20 mph it was a struggle to pedal into the headwinds. The tailwinds were a welcome relief. We took turns up front. With ten miles to go my legs were ready to quit. I told my younger counterpart to just let me go. I had little left and I didn't want to hold him back; but he stuck with me and we cycled to the finish together. In the end our average was 20.5 mph. I had a top 10 ranking in all the Strava.com segments. Maybe I'm not so bad on the flats!
